Abstract: It has been shown that it is possible to recreate the plausible illusion of many, in the demo at hand sixteen, loudspeakers over headphones. The demo is an extension to earlier showcases where the sound of two loudspeakers was recreated over headphones. These two loudspeakers served as real reference and as source to measure room impulse responses (RIRs) from the loudspeakers to a single omni microphone. The RIRs and knowledge about the room’s dimensions were used to build a model of the room acoustics wherever the listener is going. The listener’s movement is captured with fast and accurate 6DoF headtracking. Most listeners couldn’t distinguish between the real loudspeakers and their recreation via the rendering algorithm. For multichannel audio playback over headphones, a solution was found which works with only a few measured source positions. While three measurements were not enough in a short listening test, with five or seven measurements it seems to be possible to recreate the sound of 16 loudspeakers in a room. This new methodology was demoed both at the CES2024 in Las Vegas and at the EBU PTS2024 (Production Technology Seminar) in Geneva. The detailed setup of the demo and possible use cases will be presented.
