Incorporating complex surface impedance into auralization filters based on Image Sources (en)

Abstract:
Computer simulations make it possible to inspect sound propagation perceptually and investigate its impact on our day-to-day life. The so-called Image Edge Model is a mixed reflection/diffraction simulation model designed for urban environments, which identifies key sound paths before calculating transfer functions for each path. This contribution extends the model to include material-dependent specular reflections based on angle- and frequency-dependent impedance coefficients. A validation carried out on the Benchmark for Room Acoustical Simulation dataset shows more plausible filters compared to filters that assume a random-incidence absorption coefficient.
